Storm7 at West Country 7s with Humphrey Kayange & Maggie Alphonsi

Last weekend saw some amazing highlights for Storm 7! Maggie Alphonsi, (Saracens & England Vice Captain)  continued her involvement with Storm 7 Women’s team fresh from being named on the Queen’s Birthday honours list. Storm fielded no less than 6 international players, including one of the world’s best sevens players, Kenyan – Humphrey Kayange.

The weather perfectly reflected the teams name over the weekend as Storm 7 battled deluge after deluge in another high quality tournament. Storm continued their run of winning a piece of silverware at every tournament that they have entered and now have the makings of a very nice silver service set!

Women’s Competition

Storm 7 women fielded the strongest team to date and were only undone in the semi final by the French Universities team that was made up with a lot of full international players.

Maggie Alphonsi MBE was on the sidelines for Storm 7 acting as coach and mentor. Alongside her were a host of international talent including Canada captain Mandy Marchak and New Zealand International Olivia Coady. Initial signs were promising as the team won their pool matches at a canter including a win over the Akuma Dragons (who piped Storm to the post in the Manchester sevens final) 34 – 0 and Wales Sevens team. They then went on to beat the England representative side in the quarter final (a team which included several Storm 7 players from past tournaments). Unfortunately as the semi final against French University kicked off the heavens opened and made any chance of playing an expansive game incredibly hard. There were mistakes on both sides, however, the French outfit capitalised on Storm 7’s ruthlessly to win the match 3 tries to 1. They then went on to win the final against the charity team Wooden Spoons.

Men’s Competition

Tha men reached the plate competition and with the late arrival of Kenyan International, Humphrey Kayange the team duly dispatched their quarter and semi final opponents with ease to set up a final against the Sharks. In a close match Storm 7 made hard work despite fielding a very strong team they couldn’t shake off the Sharks team. With time almost up on the clock the sharks missed a conversion attempt which would have tied the game, allowing Storm to take the plate competition by 2 points!

It was fantastic to see so many top quality sevens players gathered together under the Storm 7 banner & proudly sponsored by Front Up Rugby.
